First Grade-Juniata |
The first graders loved every minute of the Halloween Party. Thank you to all the families who helped out by bringing treats and supplies. A big shout out to Mrs. Prevett for organizing the amazing games and for Mrs. Wahlmeier for helping in the classroom with the games. The students loved flinging spiders into the webs, tossing mice into pumpkins and making fabulous potions! The Frankenstein and broomstick treats along with the juice pouches were a hit.

The first graders have been busy little bees working on their falling leaves art project. First, the students used crayon to draw a trunk of a tree with branches. After the trunk was complete, students used red, green and yellow paint and Q-tips to show the changing colors of leaves. Students enjoyed mixing red and yellow to make orange and further, adding green to the mix to make brown. Students also created beautiful leaves and footballs to put on our classroom door. They got to practice cutting, gluing (with squirt glue...oh boy!) and fine motor skills during this craft.
Mr. B came to visit the first graders on Friday. He is the guidance counselor that visits the elementary students for our district. This was the first time that the first graders have met with Mr. B. He brought along a puppet friend to help him with his lesson. Ricky the Rooster and Mr. B. discussed different rules that school and the chicken coop have that are important to keep people safe. Some of the rules included: Keep your chicken feet to yourself/Keep your hands to yourself No bad clucking/no bad/hurtful words Raise your wings when you want to talk/raise your hand when you want to talk No running in the chicken coop/no running in the school No pecking at each other/Don't be bossy or a bully Looking forward to seeing you all at conferences this Thursday! The first grade scientists were busy today using gram cubes and a balance to look at the mass of different objects. Here are some pictures of their team work today.
Students and teachers alike are finding themselves back into the 'groove'. Here are some common beginning of the year questions that parents and students have about first grade:
Can kids bring a snack to school? Yes, your child can bring a snack, however, unlike kindergarten, there is not time set aside for them to eat their snack. If they need a snack, they can stay in for morning or afternoon recess to eat it quickly then head out to play. What is AR and when will my child start testing? AR (Accelerated Reader) is a program that we use to help students become independent readers. I wait until all the first graders have been STARS Tested to find out their reading zone before I hold a parent meeting. Testing usually starts mid September. What does my child need to do to be a part of Bookmobile? The Hastings Public Library brings out their bookmobile every other Thursday. You child needs to have a public library card in order to participate. I keep their cards in the classroom so that they will not get lost. ;) Communication: Please feel free to contact me anytime you have a question or concern. Hopefully you will find this website and blog to be helpful, but feel free to email or send a note with your child to school...really do whatever works best for you. Birthday treats: Birthday treats can be sent with your child (although you do not have to). Please send them with your child at the beginning of the day. We usually end up eating birthday treats after the first recess as our afternoons are packed full of learning. Birthday Invites: You can send birthday invitations to school for your child to hand out. My rule is that if the whole class is invited, there is no issue with handing them out at school. If your child is a boy and invites all the boys, they can still hand them out at school, same for if your child is a girl and invites all the girls. If only certain students are invited, I ask that you do not hand out invites at school. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I am looking forward to a great year with this amazing group of students! Every week the first graders have a different 'Skill of the Week' that they work on. Many of these skills prompt higher level thinking and challenge them. I am always impressed at what their brains soak up! This week the students have been learning about what it means to infer. Here is a song that I found by Adrienne Gear that is to the tune of My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean that helps explain what it means to infer. Inferring Song
Sometimes when you're reading a story The words are not all there for you So being a good book detective Will help you to find any clue Chorus: Infer, Infer Fill in what is not in the book (the book) Infer, Infer It's taking a much closer look Some authors leave clues in the pictures Some authors leave clues in the text They give you just part of the story And want you to fill in the rest Repeat Chorus So when you are reading a story Be careful to read what is there But then figure out what is missing Now you are inferring with flair Repeat Chorus I took a bunch of pictures of the kiddos all spiffed up for the program. Also got some pictures from when Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the elves came to visit. Enjoy the pictures!
The first graders have learned two songs to help them remember nouns and adjectives. Love incorporating music, movement, and signing into the classroom. :) First graders: Use these videos to help you practice at home. This week during language the first graders have been working on the creative writing process. Students worked whole group on prewriting activities and brainstorming. Every student had the opportunity to contribute to the class story. Students created a class story using a picture prompt to help get the creative juices flowing in their noggins. Here is the story they came up with:
One day the workers from El Puerto traveled to a sandy beach in Hawaii. When they got to the beach they saw 100 ants on a towel. The workers noticed the ants were having a birthday party for the brother ant named Dakota. So the workers from El Puerto reached into their orange bag and pulled out a red sparkly sombrero. They gave this hat to Dakota, the birthday ant. Dakota was so excited to get the pretty hat. The workers decided to leave the hat as a present for Dakota and the ant family. The workers went back home to work at El Puerto. After the class completed the story they were set loose to create their very own creative writing piece using the same picture. Students collaborated with one another sharing ideas and helping each other sound out words and look up words in the dictionary. Here are some pictures of this process. The first graders were busy bees! Students participated in jump rope for heart at Adams Central this morning. Eleven different stations were running at the same time each with a different jumpin activity. Students got their hearts pumping and enjoyed this event.
