Every week the first graders have a different 'Skill of the Week' that they work on. Many of these skills prompt higher level thinking and challenge them. I am always impressed at what their brains soak up!
This week the students have been learning about what it means to infer. Here is a song that I found by Adrienne Gear that is to the tune of My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean that helps explain what it means to infer.

Inferring Song
Sometimes when you're reading a story
The words are not all there for you
So being a good book detective
Will help you to find any clue
Chorus:
Infer, Infer
Fill in what is not in the book (the book)
Infer, Infer
It's taking a much closer look
Some authors leave clues in the pictures
Some authors leave clues in the text
They give you just part of the story
And want you to fill in the rest
Repeat Chorus
So when you are reading a story
Be careful to read what is there
But then figure out what is missing
Now you are inferring with flair
Repeat Chorus
