This week in math, Mrs. Lewis has taught the first graders how to use touch math. This is a strategy that may or may not work well for your child. Ask your child to teach you how to use the touch points when adding and subtracting numbers.
Hope that all of you enjoyed a four day weekend away from school. Yesterday, teachers spent the day at an iTi conference learning about great things that we can implement in our classrooms.
Today, your student may receive a 'no homework' ticket. These tickets are earned when students get a 100% on their math test. They can use these tickets on any math homework paper. If you as a parent do not want your child to use the tickets they earn to replace a piece of homework, they can keep them and turn them in for prizes at the end of the semester. Do what works best for you! Last week, the NED show came to our school. This was a great assembly that all of the elementary schools in the district got to listen to. Here are the big take aways from the NED show: Never Give Up Encourage Others Do Your Best This is a great motto to live by and we will continue to use it throughout the school year in first grade. The first graders have started practicing math facts. To help them memorize these first facts, they learned a 'rap'. It is called the doubles rap.
Here is the doubles rap: It's the doubles, baby, let's go, let's go! It's the doubles, baby, and it starts with zero! 0+0=0 Oh! 1+1=2 OOOOOO! 2+2=4 More! 3+3=6 Kicks! 4+4=8 That's Great! 5+5=10 Again! 6+6=12 That's Swell! 7+7=14 Let's Lean! 8+8=16 Really Keen! 9+9=18 Jelly Bean! 10+10=20 That's Plenty! Today, Mr. B. came to visit the first grade classroom. He read a book, Tattalin' Madeline to the students which discusses the difference between tattling and reporting.
Key Points: -You should 'report' to an adult if somebody is hurt or in danger. -If you are upset and somebody is not hurt or in danger, try to solve the problem on your own. First Graders have been working hard these week learning about nouns. They know that nouns are any person, place, or thing. Here is a fun youtube video on nouns. Parents, you may remember this from when you were in school too. ;) Thank you for making time to come to one of the meeting options for Accelerated Reader. We had a great turn out. This is an exciting time as your child starts reading and taking tests for AR. Please encourage your child throughout the year. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.
This week we started Skill of the Week. Every week, your child will be learning about different skills during language. This week we focused on alliterations and onomatopoeias. Ask your child to tell you about each of these skills. They may need a little prompting on how to pronounce the two words, but they should be able to tell you what they are. :) Examples of Alliteration: Silly Sally slept soundly. Paul painted pictures of purple plums. Examples of Onomatopoeias : Boom! Crash! Meow! Neigh! Click. Ding-Dong. We have made it through the first full week of school! It has been a busy week of getting back into the routine of school. The students have practiced many safety drills including, bus evacuation, fire drill, tornado drill, and school evacuation. During our Social Studies time the first graders reviewed manners that should be used during the school day as well as rules and procedures to help make our school and classroom safe places for learning.
Starting next week, we will be splitting into two groups for math. This will help me better reach the needs of each student and will give each child more one-on-one attention. Wow! The summer flew by and now it is time to start getting back into a school routine. I am looking forward to a fun filled year.
May 1st, the first graders got to go on a field trip to the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island. This field trip was about the Pawnee Indians. The students had a great time learning about the Pawnee Indians. They got to sit in a teepee, build a 'weepee' (mini teepee), go into an earth lodge among many other fun things. Here are the pictures from that day.
