This week during language the first graders have been working on the creative writing process. Students worked whole group on prewriting activities and brainstorming. Every student had the opportunity to contribute to the class story. Students created a class story using a picture prompt to help get the creative juices flowing in their noggins. Here is the story they came up with:
One day the workers from El Puerto traveled to a sandy beach in Hawaii. When they got to the beach they saw 100 ants on a towel. The workers noticed the ants were having a birthday party for the brother ant named Dakota. So the workers from El Puerto reached into their orange bag and pulled out a red sparkly sombrero. They gave this hat to Dakota, the birthday ant. Dakota was so excited to get the pretty hat. The workers decided to leave the hat as a present for Dakota and the ant family. The workers went back home to work at El Puerto.
After the class completed the story they were set loose to create their very own creative writing piece using the same picture. Students collaborated with one another sharing ideas and helping each other sound out words and look up words in the dictionary. Here are some pictures of this process. The first graders were busy bees!
