The first graders counted the money that they donated each day for Pennies for Patients. This was a great real life experience for the kids to be a part of. We usually use fake 'school' money during Math. It was so great for them to look at and count real money. The first graders were excited to count the money each day. We talked about different strategies for counting money when you have a large amount. Ex. making groups of dollars, using a tally system...
The first graders have been working on a stand alone paragraph. Everybody is writing about what three wishes they would have if a leprechaun were to grant them wishes. We have used the Write Tools color coding system. This system allows for students to focus on one sentence at a time. We started with yellow sentence strips which are the 'big idea'. After each first grader had 3 big ideas (3 wishes) they then added 'pink it ups' which are sentences that tell more about the big idea. The last color was green. The green strips are for the introduction sentence and conclusion sentence. After they completed all of the sentence strips, we tape them together to create a paragraph. Then the students do their final copy on paper. This is such a fun process to teach! Be proud of your child!!! :)
Last week we had a Fluency Party which included graham crackers with frosting. The reason behind the treat is because we talk about fluent reading being smooth like frosting a cake. The kids really enjoyed this special treat!
We are now in fourth quarter. Hard to believe! Please continue to do Fluency Folders throughout this last quarter. I can honestly tell who is doing them weekly and who is not. They are making a big difference. One of our skills of the week that we have worked on is knowing what an idiom is. After we studied idioms, the students picked different idioms to illustrate. This was such a fun art project and the kids were very creative!
