Frequently Asked Questions:
What is STARS testings?
The STARS test is a test that is administered to all students in 1st through 6th grade that determines their reading level and reading zone.
What is a 'zone' and how do I find books within my child's zone?
The zone is the suggested reading level for your child to read within during independent reading. Kids choose books from classroom library, school library, books at home, or books from public library that are within their reading zone.
Can my child read books that are above or below their zone?
Yes! Your child can read any book above or below their zone. All points go toward the end of the year party. However, to move levels, you child will need to read the amount of points to reach that level within (or above) their zone. Teachers strongly encourage students to read within their zone so that they are being as successful as possible.
When is my child ready to take a test?
After your child has read a book (or you have read it to/with them) they are ready to take a test. Tests are taken at school only. It is ok to read a book more than once before testing.
What is a passing test score? Can my child retake a test if it does not go well?
In order to pass a test, students must score a 60% or higher. Unfortunately, a test can only be taken one time per book. This is why it is encouraged to read carefully.
